Have a conversation with God


This activity is from Praying in Color: Drawing a New Path to God by Sybil MacBeth. Gather some paper and colored pencils or markers for today's breathing space.

Create some time for just you and God with no agenda. Write one of the many names you know for God and start to draw. Breathe. Turn off your words. Tune in to listening mode. Enjoy the pleasure of being in the presence of God as you would a friend or someone you were trying to get to know. “For God alone my soul in silence waits; truly, my hope is in him” (Ps. 62:6 bcp).

Have a conversation with God. Start the conversation by doodling. Don’t force words. If you have things you want to say, go ahead and say them. Maybe even write them down. When the words run out, continue to draw and be quiet. Let this time with God ebb and flow between words and silence. As someone who feels shy with God, I need time to collect my words, my thoughts, my petitions, my questions, and my praises. Drawing helps me bide my time until the words come and keeps me focused during the silences. Writing my words and the ones I think I hear creates a record of my conversation and a source for future reference.
