Books for Back to School for Kids

Back to School...this post is devoted to children, students, and school. We are all students at some level as we learn to walk more closely with our God, and this notion of exploration and discovery is something we wish to pass on to children, students, and others.
Journey to the Heart: Centering Prayer for Children by Frank Jelenek offers a framework for contemplative prayer (opening our whole being to God) that even primary schoolers can understand and practice. Beyond thoughts, words, and emotions, centering prayer is simple and practical—a way of preparing heart and mind to receive the gift of intimate relationship with God. Jesus said, “When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6) Children seem to know this intuitively and enter happliy into a deep relationship with God. Ages 3-10
The gravity point of a life before God is that his followers are to love God and love others with everything they have. Scot McKnight  calls this "The Jesus Creed." Now he's worked it out with high school and college students, seeking to show how this double commandment to love makes sense and gives shape to the moral lives of young adults. The Jesus Creed for Students aims to demonstrate a simple truth—that followers of Jesus, follow Jesus. Also, it's practical, filled with stories, and backed up and checked by youth pastors.
Sharing God's Love: The Jesus Creed for Children by Scot McKnight and Laura McKnight Barringer  is the children's companion to The Jesus Creed, and it can transform kids as they learn to love God and others with intentionality. Join Aksel and Finley as they discover how to live out the Jesus Creed throughout their day at home and school, remembering: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself.” This is a great resource for Sunday School Classes and every home of faith. "If a generation of children made the words in these pages their creed, it would change the world — and eternity." Ann Voskamp
"In a society where my generation is often mischaracterized or misunderstood by parents and those around them, assumed to be irreligious, cynical, and jaded, I intend to depict it as I see it: which is to say a generation lying just at the door of faith, having rejected everything but faith itself. Having assumed everything to be meaningless, we are very close to accepting God as the only source of meaning."  - Marjorie Corbman
In this candid, thought-provoking account, seventeen-year-old Marjorie Corbman teaches the rest of us something about faith. She recounts her own experiences as well as those of many of her friends, dismantling with remarkable transparency and grace the misconceptions surrounding today's teenagers. Chapters focus on issues and experiences that  Corbman and her peers are searching for—such as intimacy, tradition, eternity, community, justice, escape—and how each relates to what  Corbman calls "the one thing needful:" faith.
Praying in Color Kid's Edition by Sybil MacBeth
Kids can pray in color! This first-of-its-kind resource will forever change the way kids pray—and how adults try to teach them to do it. This is prayer that makes sense to kids. One minute a day will do. Any time of the day will work. Drawing with markers or crayons is half the prayer; the other half is carrying the visual memories throughout the day. Ages 5-11.
Writing to God: Kids' Edition by Rachel G. Hackenberg
offers guidance to kids that parents can also appreciate: It invites kids to speak to God creatively through their pens (or pencils, or crayons). In 35 days, kids are invited to pray to God using their senses, reflecting on their feelings, in light of Bible verses, looking at nature, to understand the ordinary events of life, to use new words and pictures for God, and to say “thank you.” The book gives children permission to experience prayer as daily conversation with God, fresh and honest.
